How to answer “Reason for leaving” on an application form
Short, honest and professional ways to explain why you are leaving or left a job on UK application forms.
Employment history sections often ask for a reason for leaving each job. Keep it short, true and neutral — a few words is usually enough.
Common reasons and how to word them
- Career progression: “Seeking a role with more responsibility.”
- End of contract: “Fixed-term contract ended.”
- Redundancy: “Role made redundant.” Redundancy is about the role, not you, so there is no need to explain further.
- Relocation: “Moved to London.”
- Study or caring: “Left to complete an MSc.” or “Left to care for a family member.”
- Still employed: “Currently employed.” or “Seeking a new challenge.”
Tips
- Do not criticise a previous employer or manager, even if the reason was difficult.
- If you were dismissed, be honest but brief, and be ready to explain what you learned at interview.
- Make sure your reasons and dates match your CV — inconsistencies are noticed.
