References on UK job applications: who to give and how
Choose referees for UK job applications, ask their permission and fill in reference sections correctly.
Most UK application forms ask for one or two referees. Employers often contact them after making an offer, though some (for example in the NHS or schools) may contact them earlier.
Who to choose
- Your current or most recent line manager — usually required as the first referee.
- A previous manager — some forms ask for referees covering a set number of years.
- Students and graduates: a tutor, placement supervisor or part-time job manager.
- Avoid friends and family unless a character reference is specifically requested.
Before you add someone
- Ask their permission and confirm their current job title, work email and phone number.
- Tell them which roles you are applying for, so they are not surprised by a request.
- Many forms ask whether a referee may be contacted before interview — say no if you do not want your current employer to know yet.
What a reference usually contains
Many UK employers give a factual reference — your job title and dates of employment — and some add information about absence or performance. A reference must be accurate and fair.
